Ian Carver recently graduated with a degree in computer science from Arizona State University and is starting his career in finance at a fin-tech startup company. Ian credits his experience with companies like PayPal and another global financial services company with Education at Work’s work-based learning model for helping him develop the necessary skills to set him up for future career success.
From an early career standpoint, Ian appreciated the opportunity to experience working in different types of positions within large Fortune 500 companies while still in college. Being able to develop professional skills, both technical and durable, all while having the support of leadership to guide and mentor him was the main value he expressed of working with PayPal.
From a college student’s perspective, Ian enjoyed being able to network and belong to a larger community of his peers in a real-world corporate setting outside of his classes. Another thing he valued was his work schedule. “A key benefit to working for PayPal over other companies that also offer tuition assistance is the flexibility, Ian noted. To be able to create a permanent work schedule that didn’t intersect with my class schedule was invaluable.”
Work-based learning is valuable because it introduces students to a long list of competencies that classroom and internships do not. Personal Effectiveness, Education and Workplace competencies are skills that are in demand in today’s workforce. Consider details like “personal service” or “adaptability.” These are integral to success in the workplace. There are scores of differentiating competencies that you obtain on your career pathway.
