Ashly Mockbee
Northern Kenucky University
Ashly Mockbee, a senior set to graduate in the spring of 2024 from Northern Kentucky University with a degree in Finance, shares how her work-based learning experience with Fidelity Investments led to an exciting postgraduate job opportunity with them.
Ashly jumped at the opportunity to work for Fidelity in a position with Stock Plan Services as it aligned perfectly with her academic studies and major in Finance. She appreciated the flexibility Fidelity provided to workaround her academic obligations and earn tuition assistance in addition to her wages. The key benefits Ashly valued most from her work experience with Fidelity were the durable professional skills and technical competencies she acquired in tandem with the tutelage she was getting from her professors and college courses.
Ashley’s soild performance and impressive work ethic didn’t go unnoticed so when there was a position opened at Fidelity, leadership tapped Ashley to apply and ultimately offered her a full-time position upon her graduation. “Working closely with EAW students, we witness firsthand how this work-based learning program transforms the students’ learning journey into a career path while allowing us the opportunity to cultivate an amazing talent pipeline”, exclaims Jessica Murray, CSA Manager, Fidelity Investments.
Ian Carver
Arizona State University
Ian Carver recently graduated with a degree incomputer science from Arizona State University andis starting his career in finance at a fin-tech startupcompany. Ian credits his experience with companies like PayPal and Discover Financial Services (DFS) with Education at Work’s work-based learning model for helping him develop the necessary skills to set him up for future career success.
From an early career standpoint, Ian appreciated the opportunity to experience working in different types of positions within large Fortune 500 companies while still in college. Being able to develop professional skills, both technical and durable, all while having the support of leadership to guide and mentor him was the main value he expressed of working with PayPal and DFS.
From a college student’s perspective, Ian enjoyed being able to network and belong to a larger community of his peers in a real-world corporate setting outside of his classes. Another thing he valued was his work schedule. “A key benefit to working for PayPal and Discover over other companies that also offer tuition assistance is the flexibility, Ian noted. To be able to create a permanent work schedule that didn’t intersect with my class schedule was invaluable.”
Our partnerships with colleges and universities are an essential component of the Education at Work success story.
Like Education at Work, our university partners are eager to make sure that students who have the greatest need are most effectively served. We work with institutions to identify students who are most likely to benefit by working with E@W. Then, we collaborate with the colleges and universities to support students with financial aid, enrollment, and career services.
EAW helps students stay in school, do better in their classes, complete their degree, graduate with less debt, and launch a satisfying and successful career.

EAW students are going in with two or three years experience versus someone who may have worked their entire college career but might not have had the opportunity to work for a Fortune 500 company. That gives them a leg up; it speaks to the critical thinking and other skill sets that employers are looking for.

Our partnership with Education at Work places students’ coursework in context of real-life work-based experiences. It is an opportunity to bring academic concepts to life.
– Taylor Randall, President, University of Utah
We partner with academic institutions across the country to create true “campus communities” where the support for EAW is embraced because of our nonprofit mission and the impact of our tuition assistance.
EAW helps our institutional partners address the challenge of disproportionate access to paid internship opportunities for students of color, low-income, and first-generation students by bringing the jobs to them. The EAW model helps students earn the money they need to stay in school, while learning the skills that will help them earn more money once they graduate. Our collaboration with universities and colleges ensures that students who have the greatest need are most effectively served.
